Whether it's rugby or football, each of these sports offers a little flexibility when it comes to the size of their pitch (and yes, not all football pitches and all rugby pitches are the same size)!

But the short answer might be: A football pitch is longer, a rugby pitch is wider!

What are the dimensions of a football field?

There are different rules and regulations depending on the competition but also the age category of the players.

Here are the most common dimensions:

• For UEFA: the pitch must be between 100 and 105 meters long and between 64 and 68 meters wide ( discover all UEFA regulations ).
• More broadly, Law 1 of football requires: a pitch between 90 and 120 meters in length, and a width between 45 and 90 meters
• For young people from U6 to U9: the field must be between 30 and 45 meters long and between 20 and 30 meters wide.
• For youth from U10 to U13: players must play on the equivalent of half a pitch (before moving to a standard-sized pitch).

What are the dimensions of a rugby pitch?

Regulations may vary between rugby 15 and rugby 7!

In rugby union, a rugby pitch is generally between 94 and 100 metres long and 68 to 70 metres wide.

Then, each line and each marking is also regulated, here are the main ones:

• the 5-meter line
• the 22-meter line
• the 40-meter line
• the 50-meter line

Ultimately, pitch sizes can vary, and that's probably why you've probably noticed a difference in feel from one pitch to another! This can have a real impact at a high level, particularly in Ligue 1 where pitches can be several meters apart and therefore sometimes require you to run more or even cover more width.
